Adult Learn to Row Programs | Saugatuck Rowing Club & Fitness

Adult Learn to Row

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to row and experience the thrill of moving along the water in a streamlined fashion? Now is your chance. This special program is designed to introduce non-members to the sport of rowing over a maximum of three months. Each month participants meet two times a week for four weeks with an SRC coach to learn the basics of rowing.

Level I, the first month includes an orientation session, practice in handling a boat in and out of the water and learning the concept of balance in order to row together in an 8-person boat. Level II, the second month increases skills so that the 8-person crew understands the concept of ratio and cadence required to move smoothly through the water. By the end of Level III the third month, participants will have the confidence to go out in smaller boats, including singles.

There is a monthly fee for learn to row classes. At the end of the first month participants can elect to become a member of the Saugatuck Rowing Club. Participants who do not elect membership may complete the three-month program. Please call the Head Masters Coach,  Dave Grossman at (203) 221-7475 or email dgrossman@saugatuckrowing.com for more information and scheduling.

If you look closely you’ll see two types of boats (also known as racing shells) making their way up and down the Saugatuck River. Sweep boats are vessels in which each rower has one oar. These boats are propelled by either two rowers each with one oar (a pair), four rowers each with one oar, or eight rowers with an oar a piece (an eight). Sculling boats are boats in which each rower has two oars. These are the single boats you see zipping along, though there are also doubles (two people, four oars), quads (four people, four oars) and octuples (eight people, eight oars).

The coxswain (also known as ‘the cox’) is the person giving the commands in the crew boats. It is pronounced cox-sin.
